Emotional Baggage will operate as an online travel agents, selling therapeutic, tailor-made travel experiences for the solo traveller and group tours. Each trip will be extremely personal to the customer, ensuring both the destinations and activities are designed around their personality, interests and problems. Each customer will receive an advice pack for their trip, a personalised writing journal and a reading list selected specifically for them. They will also have a consultation upon returning to discussed what worked for them during the trip and how they can embed this into their every day lives.
Who am I?
I am a Solent 2015 graduate - I studied Writing Fashion and Culture where I decided that I wanted to take a career within travel journalism. While interning at a travel magazine, I first had the idea for Emotional Baggage, thinking to myself that it would be good if somebody set up a therapeutic travel agency. Then a few months ago, I thought 'why not me?'
What's my story?
When I returned from a 4-week trip to Thailand, I felt like a completely better person. I was more confident, more laid-back, I worried a lot less and overall I felt a lot happier. I started reading numerous travel memoirs, stories such as 'Eat, Pray, Love' and 'Wild' where women who were unhappy in their lives went and solved their problems through long-term trips. The mental benefits of travel were apparent, but it wasn't until reading The New Art of Travel by Alain de Botton that I realised how unaddressed the psychological side of travelling is within the travel industry."Travel can assist us with our psychological education. When it corrects the imbalances and immaturities of our natures, travel reveals its full potential to function as a form of therapy in our lives. But in order to work a therapeutic effect, we need to change how we go about choosing our destinations. We should recognise that we’re badly served here by the travel industry, which cuts the world up into material categories almost entirely unattuned to the needs of our souls. It will lay before us options like ‘outdoor fun,’ ‘family adventure’ ‘culture weekends’ or ‘island hideaways’ – but leave it unexplored quite what the point of these destinations might be when considered from the point of view of our psyches." - Alain de Botton
Emotional Baggage wants to address this. It wants to use travel to promote mental health. Our trips will not be selected by material packages but by your mental reason for wanting to get away such as anxiety or feeling unmotivated or dissatisfied with life in some way. It will not be a holiday spent lazing around the pool, but will involve activities and excursions designed to address these issues. When approached in the right way - such as engaging with local culture, getting involved in entirely new experiences and learning new things - travel has the power to be transformative. I want to help people to travel this way in order get the most out of their experiences and achieve their mental motives to become happier people.
